Moved by the desire of serving the Physically & Mentally challenged, Sister. Donalda Pais determined to follow the voice of God in her heart and without any hesitation she withdrew herself from Bethany Congregation, where she lived for 32 years as a religious being and the head of on educational Institution. By the grace of God in full measure, she made herself ready in prayers and efforts to find a way for the upliftment of the Physically and mentally challenged. Whenever she was free while in service she used to set out to each and every nook and corner of towns and villages in search of Mentally Challenged, physically handicapped and children with speech and hearing problems.
While working as a headmistress, on her own in 1997, she started an Asylum at Padubidri – Mulky which she couldn’t keep longer. In the year 2000 she opened Arunodaya Special School with 3 Physically challenged children, appointing a teacher an Aya, a Speech and Physio-therapists at Belvai. For grave reasons, It has to be shifted to Karkala immediately and formed a Trust – JEEVAN WELFARE TRUST ® Karkala with 2 lay persons. The school was running in a rented house. The Institution grew up. We secured some land and from then on wards, she practically worked hard to collect funds from various organizations and Institutions e.g. we applied to a number of funding agencies in European countries on my own and through the bishop of Mangalore and priests as well. But from every where she got ‘NO Reply’. But she could not stop working for her helpless children. God filled her with vigor and courage. Going for loans, borrowing from friends, begging – with the rich and spending her own little retired benefits, she erected a small building with 5 rooms. There is lot of scope for the progress and improvement in this project. Her main aim is to make Physically challenged to lead normal life their own.
Arunodaya Special School run by Jeevan Welfare Trust ® Karkala since 2000 for Mentally challenged Children like Mild, Moderate, and OPH. We also have Deaf and Dump children. Some there are with physically disability. Arunodaya Special School for mentally challenged children, set up in the year 2000, was started with an aim to cater to the needs of the special children and provide them with a healthy and friendly environment conducive to learning life skills. Our school is Day Care school so far. From the 2018 we are planning to open a hostel. But due to the financial problem we are unable to fulfill our wish towards our disabled children.
You will also notice the No. of programmes of our children in the school and outside too. They secured lot of prizes and medals. At National level and State level children have been honored with high applause. You will be touched by our children as our children are totally depending on the good will of people for their training and education.
We are happy to inform you that we have matriculation Govt. examination centre. In the year 2017 we had sent 9 Mentally Challenged Children for S.S.L.C examination. Uptil today Out of 120 children 82 have passed. 35 with 1st class, 20 with 2nd class and the rest 27rd class.
